Dr. Frances Allen is the recipient
of the
2002 Augusta Ada Lovelace Award. Dr. Allen has been in the thick of computer science since the days of the punch card.
She joined IBM more than 40 years ago and has traveled a diverse path through the computing world.
She has been a role model, mentor, tutor and trainer.
She has worked independently and as part of a team. Dr. Allen has been recognized and honored many times for her contributions.
She was the first woman to be named an IBM Fellow - the company's highest technical honor.
She has also been a leader and active member of several technology groups and professional associations.
The award is given to
individuals who have excelled in either (or both) of two areas:
-
Outstanding scientific and
technical achievement and
-
Extraordinary service to
the computing community through their accomplishments and contributions
on behalf of women in computing
The Puget Sound Chapter will host
the awards banquet on October 12, 2002, where Dr. Allen will deliver the keynote address. Also at this banquet, the AWC will present its
third annual President's Awards. This is AWC's way of saying "Thank You" to members who have made significant contributions to AWC and the community.
These AWC members will be recognized and honored on this very special evening. For
more information about the awards banquet, visit the Puget Sound Chapter's
website at http://www.awcps.org.
